China to extend Tibetan railway to Indian border
(CNS)
China has unveiled plans for extending the Chinese National Rail
Network
to the border with India. The railway line will reach the Tibetan town of
Dromo
near the Nathu La Pass to Sikkim, the China News Service (CNS) reported.
Up to
US$1.2bn dollars (UKŁ652m; EUR€939m) will be invested in building new
railways
in the Tibetan region in the coming 10 years, said the report, citing Tibetan
officials. The planned railways included a line extending west from Lhasa to
Shigatse and another line heading east from Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo
River (Brahmaputra) to Nyingchi (Kongpo), CNS said. The line to Dromo would
extend from the Lhasa-Shigatse Line, it said.
